Rui J.C. Lopes
Managing Director and Head of Africa Relations
Rui is the founder and Managing Director of Lopes Attorneys Inc., and is the Head of Africa Relations at the firm. Rui has specialisations in animal welfare, ESG compliance, anti-bribery and corruption, data protection, dispute resolution, pharmaceuticals and healthcare, cannabis compliance and financial institutions.
Rui has been regarded as one of the leading lawyers on the African continent by the African Legal Awards, having been shortlisted as a finalist in 2020 as Most Promising Newcomer, and led the firm to its shortlisting in 2021 as a finalist in the Specialist Law Firm of the Year category.
Rui is currently writing towards his Masters at the University of the Witwatersrand, being supervised by Former Constitutional Court Judge, Edwin Cameron, on the provisions of section 24 of the Constitution.
Some of Rui’s highlights include:
Advising clients and compiling submissions to the High Level Panel in an attempt to end the captive lion breeding industry, with the subsequent announcement by Minister Barbara Creecy, that the captive lion breeding industry would come to an end;
Advising clients and compiling comments to the Draft Policy Position on, inter alia, the captive lion breeding industry, published by Minister Barbara Creecy;
Investigating misconduct by various National and Provincial Departments as it pertains to enforcement and compliance with the environmental regulatory framework;
Investigating and uncovering fruitless and wasteful expenditure of a municipality in the Western Cape in relation to the running of a pound;
Advising clients and compiling comments on the Proposed Chicken Farming Standards;
Advising clients and compiling comments on the Proposed Pig Farming Code;
Advising clients in relation to the ongoing litigation in relation to the live exportation of sheep; and
Advising clients in relation to various obligations of the Department in relation to NEMA and NEMBA and the State’s compliance with the provisions of CITES.
